How do we get data?

A person with a clipboard next to a government building and a document with data on it.

We have people who:

  • get data from different governments
  • put it into the data asset.

A document with 3 profiles of different people.

We have a list of people who can do this work.

A document with data on it, a cross and the number '1' and '2' .

They will add 2 types of data.

A person raising their hand and pointing at themselves and an ID card.

The first type of data is personal information.

For example, a person’s name and background.

A person pointing at themselves. Above them is a document with the word 'job' on it.

The second type of data is research data.

For example, what:

  • job a person has
  • services they use.

A document that says 'job', an ID card and a cross.

People can’t use both types of data at the same time.

A folder with an information icon on it and a locked padlock beside it. Inside the folder is a stack of documents.

This helps us keep personal information private.

A person pointing at themselves and raising their hand. Above them is a health data document and an education data document.

People will only use personal information to combine sets of data.

A person pointing at themselves and raising their hand. Above them is an ID card and a cross.

The research data will not have any personal information in it.

A document with a medical icon and a table on it next to a document with a education icon and a chart. There is a dotted line between them.

We use the research data to learn more about:

  • different areas of people’s lives
  • how they affect each other.

A person supporting someone else to use a computer. Above them is a support service icon.

For example, we can learn about the types of services that help people with disability get a job.

A person writing on a document and an ID card with a cross.

Researchers can only use data with no personal information in it.

A document with 3 profiles of different people.

And only researchers from our list can use the data.

A computer screen with 'ABS' on it.

You can visit the Australian Bureau of Statistics website to learn more about how we:

  • separate data
  • keep data safe.
